Training.
People sometimes ask me how they could learn how to do what I do with my dogs. There are two main areas of training: teaching your dog to find lost pets, and learning what the human is supposed to do besides just working the search dog. Most cases of missing pets are solved by methods other than the search dog, and if a search dog was your only tool, you wouldn’t be giving people the best chance of finding their lost cats and dogs.
I was trained by Kat Albrecht, who is still training people and dogs. I haven’t looked at her training in many years, but I would imagine I would agree with almost everything she teaches. In my 14 years of experience since receiving training from Albrecht, I have learned new things through experience, which might not be taught in her courses. I am currently working with a group to train our dogs, meeting weekly in the Seattle area. Our training group also needs volunteers to handle cats and dogs to be found by our search dogs, so we are always looking for more help. I also have offered online classroom training, and will offer the course in the spring or summer of 22. I will update this page when the details of the course are available. You could learn a lot on your own simply be reading the materials listed below. Please email me at [email protected] if you would like to volunteer to be a “target dog” or “target cat” handler, or if you would like to train your dog to be a search dog for lost pets.
This web page, www.3Retrievers.com, has much more information than most people take advantage of. You could learn a lot about finding lost pets if you took the time to read all of the articles here.

The Facebook group, Lost Dogs of King County, has missing dog cases posted daily, and you can learn from how those dogs are eventually found.
Kat Albrecht has a book on training your dog to find cats or dogs.
Kat Albrecht also offers online courses.
While I assume Albrecht’s courses are good, and I would probably agree with almost everything she teaches, I have not taken these courses recently. My one main caveat with Albrecht’s courses is that she has an online listing of people who have taken her courses and are currently offering services. Of the people on that list that I have had experience with, a surprisingly large percentage of them have engaged in practices that are unethical or not recommended. Taking Albrecht’s courses does not seem to guarantee that the graduates are competent or trustworthy, for reasons unknown to me. As I said earlier, as far as I know, the things I would teach probably would not differ too much from what I know of Albrecht’s teachings.
